An alternative to Internet chat rooms, The Loup, and similar teen telephone networks, are now the controversial pastime of more than 50,000 New York-area teenagers.
In New York, teens are signing up to The Loup at a growth rate of 15 percent to 20 percent a month, said company officials.
Users of the advertising-supported service are issued safety guidelines upon registering, which include warnings against giving out personal information to fellow users.
Parents in New York can also block The Loup on their home phones.
The older girl had talked several times with one of the men on the phone before inviting him to her home.
Heather Stevenson, a spokesperson for Voice Web, The Loup’s Santa Monica, Calif.-based parent company, said it has not been contacted by the police regarding the case.
To use the service, kids phone a toll-free number and make a recorded greeting that includes an ID number.“There is currently no evidence that The Loup is involved in this issue,” Stevenson told The Post.However, one Loup user told The Post that teens have had bad experiences after meeting phone friends face-to-face.The caller has the option to listen only to local callers, or to everyone who is live on the system.
